Cleaning removes soil. It does not repair fiber, and it does not undo everything that looks like a stain.
Most of what people call a dirty carpet is soil sitting in the fibers, and soil is exactly what hot water extraction is built to remove. The confusion starts with the things that look like soil but are not — because those do not respond to cleaning the same way, no matter how good the equipment or the technician.
This is the easy case. Soil, grease, and most fresh spills sit on top of or between the fibers and come out with proper extraction. This is the bulk of what a routine cleaning visit fixes, and it is genuinely straightforward.
A hallway or stair runner that has gone visibly grey is usually still soil — fine dry dust ground into the pile by repeated foot traffic. It looks worse than a spill but often responds well to a proper extraction pass, sometimes with extra agitation first.
Scrubbing a stain drives it deeper and can physically damage or fray the fiber tips while spreading the stain wider. A stain that was aggressively scrubbed years ago, rather than blotted, often has fiber damage underneath it that cleaning cannot reverse — the color may lighten, but the texture at that spot rarely comes back to matching the surrounding carpet.
Traffic patterns that have physically worn or crushed the fiber, and permanent shading from sun exposure or fiber aging, are not soil and cleaning will not reverse them. This is fiber condition, not cleanliness, and no method changes that.
A cleaner who has actually looked at the carpet can usually tell you, before starting, which of the above a given stain or worn area is. If someone promises every spot will disappear sight unseen, that is a sales answer, not an assessment.
