A rug is not carpet cut smaller. Fiber, dye and backing all vary, and wool rugs need different handling than synthetics.
Area rugs cover more variation than wall-to-wall carpet ever does — wool, synthetic, natural plant fibers, hand-knotted construction, machine-made backing, and dyes that range from colorfast to genuinely fragile. Wool in particular needs gentler moisture control and different drying time than a synthetic rug of the same size, and treating it like carpet risks shrinking the backing or setting a water ring.
Rugs also see uneven wear that carpet does not — one edge faded from sun through a window, a section worn thin from a chair leg, fringe that frays independent of the field. A cleaning pass has to account for all of that on a piece-by-piece basis rather than one setting for every rug that comes through.
