A sofa is not a carpet. Fabric type decides the method, and the wrong method can shrink, water-mark or discolor it.
Furniture fabric is a wider category than carpet fiber. Synthetic blends generally tolerate hot water extraction well. Natural fibers — wool blends in particular, and some cotton and linen upholstery — react differently to heat and moisture and can shrink, water-mark, or bleed dye if treated the same way a synthetic carpet would be.
That is why identifying the fabric comes before anything gets sprayed on it, not after. Cushions, arms and high-contact areas also soil at different rates than the rest of a piece, so a proper job treats them as separate problems rather than running one pass over the whole thing and calling it done.
